She straddles the bench, boots blunt on the floor.
The knife in her hand, a penknife, sharp
shining steel, sharp
as the womanâs right eye,
slices away at the lower half of the babyâs wet ear.
Her apron is canvas, clotted with clay, grit,
mud of the day, damp parings the size
of sow bugs or the wings of a fly.
The apron, her hair, her trousers, all dunnish grey.
She slices the spot where the babyâs ear
bridges the babyâs lined skull,
the spot where the small lobe perfects its pendulous curve,
almost unweighted, unfixed.
